''The domestic fine folk art of women kept pace with the architectural work of the men folk and assumed a very elaborate from in desin and colour gradually. The impact of the religious revival was so great on their minds that they too adopted the architectural designs of temples and structures in the vicinity of temples such as Gopurs, Pushkarinees, Deepmalas (Towers of light), for their motifs.''
''Kasuti is a South Indian embroidery particularly of the Karnatah now known as Mysore State. Kasida means embroidery in Hindi, while Kasuti its equivalent in Kanarese, the language of the Karnatak. Motifs became smaller at they gradually merged with the folds of the saree. One saree thus could have as many as sixty to seventy motifs repeated in variety of colours.'' Four types of stitches known as Gavnti, Murgi, Negi and Menthi are used in this embroidery.
''This art known as Kasuti work has always a purely domestic art. It has neither been a means of livelihood for women nor did it ever become a cottage industry, though some of the best Kasuti was also practised in Maharashtra, Goa and Andhra but the motifs were always tiny like rosary beads or rosebuds and simple one kind of motifs covered the whole saree with a tiny border.'' Kasuti of Karnatak by Indira Joshi.
